[2002 Summer]

Flowers and Events

In our everyday life, various events are observed throughout the year.
Some of these events coincide with the blossoming of seasonal flowers, bringing us the real feeling of the season.

Morning glory fair

The morning glory fair is held during the July 6-8 period every year on the premises of kishibojin temple in Iriya, Tokyo. The fair dates back to the Edo era when Iriya was home to many morning-glory farms.
As years went by, the farms and the event disappeared as the district was becoming urbanized. After the Second World War, the event was revived by the local fair enthusiasts. Today, the fair attracts a large turnout every year, with about 100 vendors setting up their outlets on the temple premises. During the fair period, approximately 20,000 potted morning glories are sold.

Ground Cherry Fair

It is said that if you worship at the Sensoji temple in Tokyo, on either July 9 or 10, the Goddess of Mercy will bestow on you her blessings for 46,000 days. Coinciding with this period, every year a ground cherry fair is held on the templefs premises.
The annual fair was begun some 200 years ago in the Ero era. Back then, ground cherry was a popular herbal medicine for coping with the summer heat. Nowadays, over 250 ground cherry shops are set up on the temple premises during the fair and these stay open from 6 ofclock in the morning until midnight. Approximately 600,000 people visit the temple each year during the two-day fair.
